Traditional arts as valuable cultural heritage of a nation, are disappearing from modem society. Vietnam, as one of the highly civilised countries in the world, abounds in various forms of traditional arts such as painting, calligraphy, music, architecture and drama, which are not only our national cultural treasures, but also treasures of the world.
As the essence of a culture traditional arts reflect a nation's artistic talents and traditions. Watercolour painting depicts a harmony between people and nature. Architecture illustrates a nation's aesthetic standards and religious beliefs. Cathedrals represent Christianity. Pagodas. totally different from cathedrals stylistically, are a symbol of Buddhism. Vietnamese Opera enriches the history of the drama of our country.
However, traditional arts are gradually drifting apart from contemporary people. One of the main reasons for this is that local authorities are not consumed enough and some art institutes lack funds and professionals, which are quite essential to the research and promotion of traditional culture. Another reason should be attributed to the impact of western cultures on traditions. For example. young people, especially youngsters, are addicted to western music like rock and roll, without any knowledge about traditional musical instruments. With economic globalisation, traditional culture and arts will be in danger of assimilation.
Therefore, how to maintain and develop traditional arts should be one of the biggest concerns of the government. Firstly, the government should set up a fund for the research and promotion of traditional arts. Secondly, the art institutes and colleges should work out a long-term development scheme, organising systematic research on traditional arts. Arts belong to a nation and the whole world as well. The prosperity of traditional arts will diversify the cultures of the world.
