To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is tempting to think that new technology can replace the need for classroom-based language lessons. However, the reality is that while computers may be adept at translating vocabulary and even some idiomatic expressions, the subtleties of a living language like French, Spanish or Japanese are beyond the scope of the current software.
In a language, there are four essential skills which include reading and listening comprehension as well as spoken and written expression. The most important, and also the most complex of these, is expression. The words, the syntax and the conjugations are only aspects of this. Computers may be able to interpret many of these, but the tone of voice, sarcasm and understatement would be impossible for them at this stage. I discovered when learning Spanish that reading was relatively easy and I could catch the gist of what most people said, but speaking was significantly more difficult.

When learning to speak another language, we also pick up on the culture of the country. Concepts that exist in one language may not exist in another. In this case, translation, on a computer or otherwise, is useless. The French expression 'une papinade' derives from the French football player Jean Pierre Papin’s particular technique for scoring goals. While a computer or a dictionary might find the translation, it would miss out on the fact that the expression is a homage to one of France’s greatest sports stars.
In conclusion, there is still a need to learn a language despite the advances in modern translation tools. While speaking a foreign language will always involve learning the words and the rules of grammar, it also requires reading between the lines and immersing oneself in the culture.
