Friends are like family members whom we are actually able to choose. Depending on the characteristic of each individual, one can seek friends that either share many similarities or be worlds apart. All the same, there are various reasons to support both choices.

Having friends whose characters, hobbies and social status are similar to ours can bring us many advantages. Maybe we are fond of collecting stamps, then what a pleasure it is to have a friend with the same taste and exchange the little “treasures” with him; or maybe we are interested in playing tennis, then how wonderful it is to compete with our friend, also a big tennis fan, in a green field. Friends who are similar to us are easy to get along with, and between friends, there is always something in common. Because of the similarity, they can see something from our position and understand us better.

When it comes to making friends who are different from us, although they may not have what we have, they have what we do not have. Perhaps the least similar friends are Mr. Fogg, the protagonist in the science fiction Around the World in Eighty Days, and his ardent, humourous and talkative servant, Jean, who was not the least like his old-fashioned master. Nevertheless, Mr. Fogg’s courage and bravery during the great trip and his compassion towards Mrs. Aouda at the end of the story were partly from the influence and help of Jean. A different friend is a mirror which can reflect our virtues and shortcomings. From him, we can find what we lack and learn what we need. When viewed from these perspectives, different friends may do more in shaping us than the similar ones do.

No matter how similar they are, friends have differences, and no matter how different they are, as friends, they have at least one similarity: sincerity towards friendship. In a sincere friendship, we can find shelter from danger, courage in need, and hands willing to help. We should open our heart to our friends, whether they are similar to or different from us.
