To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many teenagers today have a laptop computer, a smartphone and possibly a tablet that they can connect to the internet from their bedroom. Some may fear this is a distraction from schoolwork, but it is also an invaluable tool for learning. The internet gives instant access to an enormous databank of information, and parents should be encouraged to help their children’s education by giving them access to this resource.
There is an increasing trend to set assignments that require schoolchildren to research a topic. In the past, the local library would have a set of encyclopedias which would give a few lines or a page of information on a topic. While this was a suitable method in the past, utilising the thousands of pages of articles, videos and private blogs will guarantee a more in-depth view of almost any topic under the sun. I was once asked to do a presentation on South American horned frogs for a biology class. I quickly found a documentary online and several magazine articles which gave me all the information that I needed.

Most schools have a mix of good teachers who help you to learn all you need to know about a topic and others who, through failing to keep control of the class or lacking the required motivation, leave you lacking the knowledge necessary to pass the end-of-year exams. ln such cases, the internet can bridge the gap by filling in the holes left by the teachers. Tutorial videos, free available exercises and educational websites helped me through preparation for GCSEs in maths, history and geography when the respective teachers had been either regularly absent or unable to motivate the class.
In conclusion, it is in the interest of all parents who care about their children’s education to provide them with this vital tool. The benefits in terms of access to information and study advice are tangible and cannot be replicated by a different source.
